amidzin konak u kragujevcu, milosev venac, zavod za zastitu spomenika kulture kragujevac

The oldest history of the Kamenac Monastery is unknown, but according to tradition, it was founded by Despot Stefan Lazarević in the early 15th century. According to an inscription above the entrance portal into the naos, the church was first renovated in 1547, and then again in 1700, when it was surrounded by stone walls. At the beginning of the 19th century, the monastery was heavily damaged during the wars with the Turks, and after liberation, numerous interventions began, culminating in the creation of frescoes and the installation of the iconostasis in 1870.

The church is in the shape of a compact triconch with a larger altar apse, deeper than the side apses. In the altar area, there are three deeper niches, two of which are blind, and the central one has a window of the apse. A slender octagonal dome rests on pendentives and side pilasters, rising above the central area of the naos, which is vaulted with a semi-dome. It is built from rubble stone of uneven sizes and profiles, and the floor is made of square and rectangular marble stone slabs. The architectural decoration includes a profiled roof cornice, a lunette above the former entrance portal, alternating windows in shallow archivolts on the dome, and two rectangular edicules on a square, subsequently added exonartex.

On the walls of the interior of the church and narthex, there are frescoes from 1870. The arrangement of the frescoes is typical of church painting of that period. It is characterized by a firm linear design, with lifeless and stiff facial expressions, lacking vitality. The compositions are roughly done, with some figures appearing static and monotonous. The textile is better executed with rich drapery and side details. The color palette is very contrasting, without tonal shading, and the color scheme is rich with dominant warm tones. The arrangement of the frescoes follows an established doctrine, but in a manner typical of the century in which it was created.
