The Kalenić Monastery, one of the most beautiful and significant medieval monasteries in Serbia, was built at the beginning of the 15th century during the reign of Despot Stefan Lazarević. It was founded as an endowment by Proto-deacon Bogdan, his wife Milica, and his brother Petar, as evidenced by the donor composition in the church and a later inscription carved in the lower part of this fresco.

The monastery complex has suffered multiple destructions throughout its history, but the church dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary remained undamaged. The church, with the basic layout of a compact tripartite structure with a narthex, was built using alternating layers of stone and brick, held together by a thick layer of lime mortar. The facades are vertically divided by columns and pilasters and horizontally with two decorative friezes running around the entire church. Above the central part of the nave, a slender dome is placed, while a blind dome rises above the narthex.

The vividness and decoration are the main features of this harmonious building. The attic is richly decorated with ornamental brickwork. The rhythm of the polychromy of the exterior walls, the interplay of arches, colonnades, archivolts, and small columns, as well as the playful form of the roofs, are emphasized. In the zone between the cordon friezes, biforas are placed, and above them, colonnades with small columns and circular decorative rosettes. The decorative stonework on the windows, portal, rosettes, and arches is among the finest achievements of the Moravian school. Its main motif consists of an interlaced band, stylized lilies, and palmettes. Alongside geometric and floral motifs, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic elements also appear. One of the most significant depictions is a relief in the lunette above the southern window of the narthex. It shows the Virgin Mary with Christ and six-winged seraphim.

KALENIĆ MONASTERY

The painting of Kalenić is considered one of the most successful examples of medieval Serbian art. It is characterized by a confident drawing, refined, almost pastel-like colors, and the delicate plasticity of human figures.
