Consecrated Ivković Monastery in Ivkovački Prnjavor
near Jagodina
The restored Ivković Monastery in Ivkovački Prnjavor near Jagodina was consecrated on September 21, 2024. On that occasion, the Holy Hierarchical Liturgy was served by Archbishop of Kragujevac and Metropolitan of Šumadija Jovan, after which the Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute Kragujevac was awarded a hierarchal charter of recognition for its work in preserving the sacral cultural heritage of Šumadija and Pomoravlje.
According to tradition, the church dedicated to the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Ivkovački Prnjavor was built in the second half of the 14th century, during the reign of Prince Lazar (Serbian Knez Lazar). It was burned and rebuilt several times, with the main restoration carried out by the beekeeper Ivko Kovanadžija, who (also according to tradition) went as far as the Sultan in Constantinople for that purpose.
The church was rebuilt using stone and plastered with a mixture of lime and yellow sand. It is modest in size, consisting of a narthex, nave, and altar apse. The transept ends in underdeveloped choir spaces to the north and south, while in the roof structure it is slightly more pronounced. At the intersection of the nave and transept rises a dome — circular on the inside and octagonal on the outside. The narthex has two shallow arched niches on both the northern and southern walls. The altar apse is semicircular with a semi-dome. Toward the iconostasis, it ends with the eastern bay, the prothesis, and the diaconicon. The apse has a small single arched window, as do the choir areas, where the windows are very narrow. The original floor was wooden, later replaced with stone, except for the area of a grave on the southern side of the narthex. The old iconostasis, due to deterioration, was replaced by a new one, onto which the icons were returned in their original arrangement.
The Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos was designated an immovable cultural heritage – a cultural monument by the Decision of the Government of the Republic of Serbia No. 633-7571/2005 dated December 1, 2005. The restoration works were carried out in cooperation between the Šumadija Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Homeland Museum of Jagodina, and the Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute Kragujevac.
