The remains of the ancient city ‘Horreum Margi’ are located between the rivers Ravanica and Morava, in the area of the modern military barracks in the center of Ćuprija. The site consists of the remains of a Roman fortified town from the 4th to 5th century, a medieval fortification of the town of Ravno, established in two phases from the 11th to 13th century, and a bastion fortification built in 1737 under the order of Governor Karl Alexander of Wurttemberg.
The city was located on the Roman military road via militaris, which connected the Roman provinces of Central Europe (Pannonia, Noricum, Rhaetia) with the Balkan provinces (Moesia Inferior, Dalmatia) and Greece during the 3rd century. From Roman times until today, the site of this fortification, located at the center of the navigable stretch of the Morava River and in the immediate hinterland of the Danube Limes, has hosted various military garrisons. The city's location allowed it to develop as a point for collecting grain and taxes in kind, as a craft and trade center, and in the 4th century, an imperial workshop for the production of weapons was established there. As a grain warehouse – horreum, it was significant as a military supply depot for Roman legions scattered throughout the empire. The ancient city was destroyed in the mid-5th century during the Hun invasion.
