Finally, with the establishment of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute Smederevo in 1995, the municipalities of Velika Plana, Žabari, Petrovac, Žagubica, Malo Crniće, and Kučevo came under the jurisdiction of that Institute.

Today, the Institute in Kragujevac operates in the territories of the cities of Kragujevac and Jagodina and eleven municipalities in the Šumadija (Aranđelovac, Batočina, Topola, Rača, Knić, Lapovo) and Pomoravlje (Despotovac, Svilajnac, Ćuprija, Paraćin, Rekovac) regions.

Within this area, 168 immovable cultural heritage has been registered, including: 149 Cultural Monuments (Kragujevac 43, Aranđelovac 12, Batočina 2, Topola 16, Knić 11, Rača 5, Jagodina 20, Svilajnac 11, Despotovac 5, Ćuprija 4, Paraćin 15, Rekovac 5); 9 Archaeological Sites (Kragujevac 2, Aranđelovac 1, Batočina 2, Jagodina 1, Despotovac 1, Ćuprija 1, Paraćin 1); 6 Spacial Cultural-Historical Units (Kragujevac 3, Aranđelovac 1, Topola 1, Jagodina 1); 4 Notable Sites (Kragujevac 1, Aranđelovac 1, Despotovac 1, Ćuprija 1).

The primary activity of the Institute is the implementation of the protection system for Cultural Monuments, Spatial Cultural-Historical Units, Archaeological Sites, and Notable Sites, as well as all other heritage registered with this institution. This heritage is recorded as assets under preliminary protection and possess characteristics that justify their protection by the state.

The activities carried out by the Institute include:

• Research and documentation of cultural heritage;
• Study and protection of heritage, proposing monumets for cultural heritage status, and maintaining special registers and documentation on specific cultural heritage;
• Providing assistance and cooperation with the owners of cultural heritage;
• Research and presentation of cultural heritage;
• Developing studies, programs, and projects for conservation, restoration, and protection of urban and rural environments and units;
• Preparing studies and projects for spatial planning related to the assessment and valorization of cultural heritage;
• Conducting direct professional supervision over conservation and restoration work on cultural monuments;
• Issuing conditions for undertaking technical protection measures for cultural heritage and those under preliminary protection;
• Publishing the results of research work;
• Performing various other professional tasks in the field of cultural heritage protection

The work of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute Kragujevac is organized into three organizational units:
