Venčac, Messages and Secrets
Exhibition in the Gallery of National Museum in Kragujevac
Material culture of a people reflects its spiritual culture and the soul's need for harmony and beauty.
Preserving, nurturing, and promoting cultural heritage as its most beautiful, unique, and inalienable adornment is both a duty and a privilege. In the study of Roman civilization, archaeology plays an invaluable role as a scientific discipline dedicated to examining the physical traces of human activity. Material remains, alongside immovable archaeological monuments, include movable artifacts such as everyday objects, items intended for worship, and more.
This exhibition presents various artifacts—jewelry, coins, equipment, and pottery—discovered during archaeological excavations at the Venčac site. These objects illustrate aspects of life in the Roman province of Upper Moesia, which encompassed much of present-day Serbia.
The everyday use of ceramic vessels led to their extensive production, making them the most abundant finds at archaeological sites. In the Roman world, ceramic production varied: in rural areas, individual workshops catered to local needs, while in cities, larger workshops produced a wider variety of ceramics.
Functional clothing accessories and jewelry, as symbols of social status, were an essential part of Roman society. Among functional accessories were fibulae and belt buckles, available in different shapes, designs, decorations, and materials.
Jewelry represents a unique expression of both the spiritual and material culture of every people or ethnic group, serving utilitarian, religious, or aesthetic purposes.
The artifacts displayed in this exhibition date from the 4th to the 6th century AD. These precious exhibits will transport you into the past, allowing you to encounter the culture and way of life of the people who lived in this region centuries before us, paving the way for the development of contemporary culture.
Perhaps the beauty of these artifacts will help us better understand the soul, needs, and fears of the people of Upper Moesia—and remind us that we shape our world with every moment of the way we live.
