THE RUINS KNOWN AS ‘CRKVINE’

PETKOVICA, STRAGARI

Four kilometers from Stragari, during extensive archaeological research in 1956, the remains of a church were discovered. After the completion of the research, the church was fully reconstructed on the old foundations.

It had three architectural phases. In the first phase, it was a single-nave building, vaulted with a semi-domed roof. The second phase includes the narthex built on the western side at the end of the 14th century, and the third phase includes the chapel added to the southern side of the church. The entire structure was built from ordinary, roughly hewn stone.

The church’s vault had been completely destroyed, and remnants of frescoes were found in some parts. In the niche above the entrance doors in the naos, there are fragments of a fresco depicting Jesus Christ, while fragments of a later layer of painting, depicting the ‘Dormition’, have been preserved on the western wall of the naos.

The older layer of frescoes dates back to the second half of the 13th century, so it is believed that the church originates from this period. The younger layer of frescoes dates from the first half of the 14th century and is stylistically related to the painting in the monuments built by King Milutin.

During archaeological excavations in 1968, two levels of burial were identified around the church, dating from two different periods. The younger phase is characterized by gravestones made of local stone, each with one stone vertically placed in the ground at the western and eastern ends of the gravestone.

The older burial phase includes gravestones found 0.40 meters deeper than those from the younger period. On two of the gravestones from this phase, inscriptions written in Old Church Slavonic script were discovered. One mentions the year 1379 (year 6887), while the other mentions 1443, dating this burial period to the 14th-15th centuries.
