The Church of St. Archangel Gabriel was built in 1832 on the foundations of an earlier medieval church. It is connected to Priest Atanasije Antonijević, who swore in the participants of the First Serbian Uprising and is considered a central figure in the assembly at Orašac.
After the uprising, the church was burned down, but the locals rebuilt it. It is a single-nave structure measuring 6m x 18m, with a detached polygonal apse on the eastern side and a bell tower added later. The church is made of stone, reinforced with arches, and vaulted. The roof structure is covered with tin sheets. The simple rhythm of the facade decoration is interrupted by shallow relief ornamentation below the roof cornice, made in plaster.
The church originally had three wooden iconostases. The first was painted by Živko Pavlović, a ‘moler’ from Požarevac, who worked on many churches in this part of Serbia during the mid-19th century. Later, the iconostasis was repainted by iconographer Svetislav Đurić, who followed the theme and layout of the old iconostasis.
During the last reconstruction of the church in 2014, an iconostasis made of white wedding marble was installed.
THE CHURCH OF ST. GAVRILO
WITH A MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN IN BUKOVIK
On the exterior of the northern wall of the church, there is a commemorative plaque that testifies to a historical event related to Priest Atanasije Bukovički.
The Memorial Fountain at the entrance to the churchyard is also of great historical significance for this region. It was built in 1927 during the reign of King Alexander I Karađorđević, made from stone blocks, in memory of the rebels and fallen soldiers in the liberation wars of Serbia from 1912 to 1918.
The Church of St. Archangel Gabriel with the Memorial Fountain in Bukovik has been designated as an immovable cultural heritage
a cultural monument, by the Decision of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, No. 71/94 dated December 6, 2005, published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia, No. 108 on December 6, 2005.
