MONUMENT TO THE FALLEN ŠUMADIJA SOLDIERS
The Monument to the Fallen Šumadija Soldiers was erected in 1932, near the city marketplace and the city center. It was created based on a design by the renowned sculptor Antun Augustinčić, who won an anonymous competition announced in 1928. The monument itself was realized in collaboration with Jozo Kljaković, a professor at the Zagreb Academy of Arts.
The monument was built in memory of fallen warriors of Šumadija in Serbia’s wars. Copper plaques mounted on the walls beneath the sculptures bear the engraved years: 1815, 1911, 1912, and 1914. The structure consists of several elements: a circular stone staircase, a four-armed stone pedestal covered with plaster, two soldiers in uniforms in a combat stance on each arm of the pedestal corresponding to the years of the wars, and a central pylon featuring a young woman with an outstretched right hand holding a crown, representing the primary and central symbol of liberation. All the figures are cast in bronze and are depicted with great realism.
At the recessed corners between the arms of the pedestal are shallow copper reliefs featuring wartime motifs and figurative forms, including: Captivity, The Sorrows of Great Mothers, Rows of Graves, and Birds in Flight.
After World War II, the crown held by the central female figure was replaced with a laurel wreath. In 1990, the laurel wreath was replaced with the crown, restoring the monument to its original appearance.
The Monument to the Fallen Šumadija Soldiers was designated as a cultural heritage – a cultural monument, by the Decision of the Government of the Republic of Serbia No. 633-6872/2001, dated July 17, 2001, and published in the Official Gazette No. 46 on July 27, 2001.
