COMPLETED CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION WORKS ON KOLONSKA KAPIJA IN KRAGUJEVAC, FUNDED BY THE CULTURAL HERITAGE PRESERVATION INSTITUTE KRAGUJEVAC
Kolonska Kapija in Kragujevac was built in the 1920s and served as the entrance to the Old Workers’ Colony, constructed to accommodate the workers of the Military Technical Institute and their families. According to photographs from 1929, it can be concluded that the settlement was enclosed on all sides with wire and wooden fence, and that the original entrance gate was made of wood and decorated with slatted figures. It was later rebuilt using solid materials, including two small guardhouses. Spanning the width of the street, from one end of the gate to the other, the inscription ‘Workers’ Colony of the Artillery-Technical Institute’ was written in iron letters, with the double-headed eagle of the Nemanjić dynasty placed above the inscription.
In accordance with the measures of technical protection by the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, the works carried out by the company ‘Tandem Gradnja’ from Kragujevac, under the supervision of the conservators of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute Kragujevac, began on February 1, 2025, and were completed on March 20, 2025. The metal plaque on the gate and the decorative chains were dismantled, restored, and painted matte black, as was originally the case based on photographic documentation and the examination of all layers on-site during the work. Based on the same, the guardhouses were painted (original) green. The entire locksmith work and columns were cleaned, old layers of paint were removed, and in two coats over the base, they were painted in matte black. In this way, the conservation-restoration works were completed, and the Kolonska Kapija in Kragujevac was fully revitalized.
