Alexander’s Mine Shaft, along with the building above it, the platform in front of the mine shaft, the barracks - workshops for servicing machines, and the central warehouse, from a unique complex within the Senje Mine (Senjski Rudnik in Sertbian) near Despotovac. The mine shaft has been preserved together with the building above it, which served as the first administration and worker’s reception. It was bulit in 1860. The main entrance to the mine shaft is in the form of an arch made of hewn stone, while the other walls supporting the earth above are made of rubble stone with pronounced horizontal and vertical joints. The building above the mine shaft consists of one room with an entrance and three windows on the front side. In front of the entrance to the mine shaft is the handling area, which was used for unloading coal and as a place from which it was further transported to the mechanical separation. Adjacent to the mine shaft is a barrack, which housed workshops for servicing workers. Included in this complex is a building for equipment storage.
ALEXANDER’S MINE SHAFT
IN SENJE MINE
The mine shaft with the entrance, bypass, exploitation method, and traffic layout holds historical and sociological value, providing an opportunity for examining and further studying the life of miners from the 19th century to the present, as Senjski Rudnik, once a mining administrative center, is gradually declining.
Alexander’s Mine Shaft in Senje Mine has been designated as a cultural monument – immovable cultural heritage, by the Decision of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Institute Kragujevac, No. 66/1, dated February 24, 1975, and as a cultural heritage of great importance by the Decision of the Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Serbia (‘Official Gazette’ of the Socialist Republic of Serbia No. 14/79, dated April 7, 1979).
